Baleal and Peniche are one of Europe's top surf regions, with a variety of surf spots available providing a unique consistency.

The Moche Rip Curl World Surf League Championship competition in October each year bring surfers from around the world to ride the waves of the area - a real event for surfers and spectators alike.

There are a variety of surf schools offering individual and group lessons, courses as well as board hire. A couple of the best are Baleal Surf Camp and the Peniche Surf camp.

There is very much a laid back, surf vibe in Baleal. The beach is lined with cafes serving refreshments during the day; by night they become popular bars with DJs and music, open until dawn rises over the surf.
